She Said Boom! is a book and record shop, named after the Toronto all-women ‘80s punk band Fifth Column, that has been a fixture on the city’s cultural scene for over two decades. The first location on College Street opened in 1995 and they expanded to Roncesvalles Avenue in 1999.
Continuing the tradition as one of the first businesses in Toronto to sell both books and music, they buy and sell used books, vinyl, and a small selection of CDs and DVDs.
Walk through the red door in Roncy, and you’ll encounter a small, stacked shop with buttercream yellow walls and black shelves filled with second-hand paperbacks. Boxes of records categorized by genre are organized in the middle and there’s a little cubby near the front (the size of Harry Potter’s bedroom beneath the stairs) flanked by two blue kid’s chairs and a curtain delineating the children’s section.
If you haven’t visited either shop, you might have heard about it when Jeopardy champion Mattea Roach gave it a shout-out as one of the Toronto stores she frequents. Also, according to their website, She Said Boom! was voted “best bookstore in the world by two Australian tourists” :)
