Caversham Booksellers is North Americaβs leading (and largest) mental health bookstore. Founded in 1989 by Dr. Christine Dunbar, a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist, and Peter Heyworth, an English professor at the University of Toronto, Caversham has been in operation for over 30 years.
Specializing in psychology and mental health, this is the go-to spot for all of the self-help books you could possibly want. Whether youβre an expert in the field or just curious to learn more about how the brain works and why we behave in certain ways, Caversham is a welcoming place to peruse for both professionals and pedestrians.
Their website, albeit archaic, has a list of their best sellers (including The Body Keeps Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma, Attachment Theory in Practice, and Reinventing Your Life: The Breakthrough Program to End Negative Behaviour and Feel Great Again), but I recommend relying on the expertise of the staff who are well-versed in every psych-related title under the sun.
I picked up a card deck called The Anxiety and Stress Solution Deck that has 55 cards with helpful prompts, tips, and tools you can pick at random β kind of like tarot cards for when youβre feeling stressed, anxious, or overwhelmed.
They also have an active bookclub that you can join in person at the bookstore or participate in virtually via Zoom to discuss the latest and greatest.
