Bakka-Phoenix is Canada’s oldest science fiction and fantasy bookstore since 1972. The name Bakka, was taken from Frank Herbert’s Dune, and means ‘the weeper who mourns for all mankind’.

They have nearly every sci-fi and fantasy series you could possibly imagine, including a beautiful collector’s edition of J.R. R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings as well as the complete Dune collection. I was happy to spot a shelf filled with Canada’s Emily St. John Mandel, author of Station Eleven, The Glass Hotel, and Sea of Tranquility.

Located on Harbord Street, Bakka-Phoenix hosts author appearances, readings, panels, and is THE place to shop for all fantasy & sci-fi lovers.

Fun Fact: Jagmeet Singh, human rights activist and the Leader of Canada’s New Democratic Party, was also book shopping while I was in there :)
