The Beguiling (which means “highly attractive and tempting”) first opened in 1987 and is considered Canada’s premiere bookseller of comics, graphic novels, manga, cartoons, and high-art funnybooks — showcasing the country’s largest selection of alternative, underground, and avant-garde graphic stories.
The shop is well-staffed and well-organized. New comic books come into the shop every Wednesday and they regularly buy old comics from the 1930s to present day if you’re a vintage collector.
In 2003, the staff founded the annual not-for-profit Toronto Comic Arts Festival, which continues to grow and bring indie creators from around the world to celebrate the best of comic art.
After 20 years in the Annex, they moved to College Street in 2017 where they were able to double their retail space and open the adjacent sister store, Little Island Comics, the world’s first comics shop exclusively for young readers.
