Capricorn Books is an unassuming second hand bookshop sandwiched between a Tim Hortons and a Donair shop (a popular east coast fast food delicacy…similar to a gyro or shawarma), which feels appropriately Canadian.
My husband and I were walking his family dog and on our way to pick up a takeout coffee when we walked by it…and if you’re anything like me, there’s no such thing as walking by a perfectly good used bookstore without going inside.
At the tinkle of the bell, I was greeted warmly by the owner (also the sole employee that day), who will leave you alone to browse — however if you’re looking for a specific title, she knows where every author is located in the well-organized, yet packed bookshop. If there’s a book you’re looking for that they don’t have, you can leave your name and she’ll call you if it comes in.
Capricorn Books has a great selection of gently used paperbacks at incredibly low prices. They had the original Babysitter’s Club series (a tween favourite of mine) for much cheaper than you’d find at big box stores. If there’s an author, genre, or series you’re interested in getting into, this would be the place to stock up on cheap copies in great condition.
I took my time wandering through and spotted a few interesting collectibles including vintage Canadiana books and some old Marilyn Monroe and Jackie O biographies. The biography, classic literature, and mystery/thriller sections were particularly robust. They also sell records, dvds, comics, magazines and offer tarot readings.
Just a note that the owner is “scent sensitive” (she’s friendly enough in explaining that they give her a headache after a long time) so I don’t advise wearing any strong perfumes or colognes if you plan on perusing for awhile :)
