Atlantic News is a local institution as “Halifax’s Original Newsstand,” having been in operation for over 50 years after first opening their doors in September 1973.
Truthfully, when I stumbled upon it on my way to another bookshop, I wasn’t sure if I should even stop in as I didn’t think they sold books, and boy am I so glad that I did. I was awed by their extensive collection of local and international selection of books, magazines, newspapers, literary journals, crosswords, greeting cards, postcards, puzzles, and games.
The staff are also extremely helpful and if there’s any niche magazine or newspaper that you’re searching for from around the world, they’ll source it for you and ship it specially in.
Book-wise, they had a smartly curated collection of bestsellers, as well as staff picks, but I was most impressed by their literary journal offerings from the Paris Review to the Sewanee Review to the London Review of Books.
I was tempted to buy one of the Virginia Woolf, Brontë Sisters, or New Yorker puzzles, but didn’t think they would fit in my suitcase alongside the other items I picked up including: Nova Scotia stickers (to decorate my Bookshop Bucket List passport), an Old Bookstore candle (that smells like tobacco, leather, coffee, and the pages of an old book), Maude Lewis postcards (she was a famous Canadian folk artist from Nova Scotia), and a 2024 Bookstore calendar!
