Balfour Books is one of my favourite second-hand bookshops in the city. They have everything from art, photography, design, cooking, children's books, poetry, philosophy, biography, to every genre of fiction imaginable. It’s also a treasure trove of rare and unusual hardcovers.

Outside, they have $1 book bins with some sought-after titles, while inside the ornate ceiling, warm lighting, and vintage furnishings add a touch of whimsy, making it a cozy, inviting spot to browse. I particularly love the wooden scrabble tiles used to categorize each genre and the framed photographs and posters of authors and books from bygone eras.

I picked up two Agatha Christies for my paperback mystery collection, a 50th anniversary edition of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and A Moveable Feast by Ernest Hemingway. I’m already itching to return to see what other gems I can find.

If you find yourself strolling College Street, you’d be remiss not to make a pitstop at Balfour (just make sure you have a tote bag handy for the literary treats you’ll inevitably want to bring home).
